The University of Madras or Madras University is a public state university and one of the oldest in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The university is recognized by the UGC as one of the centres for "potential for excellence" in the country. Madras University is ranked 50th among top universities in India by NIRF 2023. The university has six campuses in Chepauk, Mariana, Guindy, Taramani, Maduravoyal, and Chetpet. Madras University offers more than 230 courses under 87 academic departments. It also has 121 affiliated colleges and 53 approved research centers.
Madras University offers UG, PG, Research, Diploma, and Certificate programs. The courses are offered in areas of sciences, social sciences, humanities, management, and medicine. Madras University also offers distance education through the Institute of Distance Education (IDE). Madras University admission is granted on the basis of merit or entrance examination conducted by the university. Admission to the MBA, and MCA courses is based on the TANCET scores.
